World Cup Playoffs: Wales & Northern Ireland - Will One More Home Nation Qualify?

Every fan around the world dreams of their country qualifying for the World Cup. This time around, it’s a bigger tournament than ever before, and for those teams that have just missed out, there is pressure to achieve these dreams through the World Cup playoffs. Wales and Northern Ireland have a second chance at glory and happen to find themselves in the same portion of the playoff, potentially playing each other in a one-off game to reach the finals in June. Will one more home nation make it to the USA, Canada, and Mexico, or will it just be England and Scotland flying the flag at World Cup 2026?

If you’re planning on playing our World Cup predictor game alongside watching the tournament this summer, you’ll want to get a feel for the countries that might still qualify through the playoffs. Here is our guide to Wales and Northern Ireland and how they might fare at the end of March.

The Red Wall awaits: What path to the World Cup does Wales face?

Wales has been here before, winning one playoff route to get to the World Cup last time around in an emotional final against Ukraine, and losing to Poland on penalties to miss out on the European Championships. With home advantage for both games this time, a semi-final against Bosnia is eminently winnable for the Red Dragons, and the Red Wall will get behind the boys.

Wales key strengths are:

  1. Home advantage at the Cardiff City Stadium (CCS) for the semi-final and potential final.

  2. The Red Wall offers 12th man support to the team.

  3. There has been a positive atmosphere and feeling around the group since Craig Bellamy took over as Head Coach.

  4. Key players in top form, such as Harry Wilson in the Premier League for Fulham.

Wales has been in a golden era of football for the last 12 years, qualifying for two European Championships and one World Cup. Despite the retirement of World Class talent such as Gareth Bale in the last few years, the current team has a strong core and a manager who promotes attacking play. It’ll be tough to get past Bosnia and a potential final against Italy or Northern Ireland, but after this period of success, there is belief where there was once only doubt.

The Green and White Army (GAWA): Can Northern Ireland defy the odds?

After years in the doldrum it’s been a pretty impressive decade for an underdog team. After reaching the knockout stages of Euro 2016, Northern Ireland has remained competitive and is now two games away from reaching its first World Cup since 1986. A tough draw against Italy away and then a potential away game against either Wales or Bosnia in the final makes Northern Ireland the underdogs, but there is plenty of hope to be found.

Northern Ireland’s key strengths are:

  1. O’Neil has been there and proven it as Northern Ireland manager. There’s no one better to lead the team against the odds.

  2. There’s a fearlessness in the young players, and the team will have a go rather than sit back and hope to grind out a result.

  3. A defensive solidity remains in the side, giving it a chance to compete against any side.

  4. Daniel Ballard and Trai Hume bring Premier League quality to the squad.

It remains to be seen whether Micheal O’Neil can take Northern Ireland to another major international tournament. It will certainly be tough to get there, especially without talisman, Liverpool’s Connor Bradley. With Ballard and Hume in the team, there is that sprinkling of elite level experience to lean on.

How to predict World Cup playoffs and tournament results?

You could potentially use the European playoffs as a testing ground for the World Cup predictor game in the summer, testing out theories and trying to predict who the winner will be. This can be broken down into:

  • Who’s the bookies' favourite? – Italy will be the favourites to win this section of the European World Cup playoffs. Do you choose the favourites in each game? Italy to beat Northern Ireland, Wales to beat Bosnia and then Italy to beat Wales?

  • Head to Head – Wales have a good history of beating Italy (a famous victory in 2002, one of the all-time great nights in Welsh football) and Northern Ireland. Even though Wales lost to Bosnia in 2015, it was the game that qualified them for the first international tournament since 1958.

  • A calculated guess – take all the information at your fingertips and make an educated guess at the outcome of the playoffs.
