After the final round of matches on 21st November, we now know 21 of the 24 teams who will take part in your Euros 2024 football predictor game. With the main draw for the tournament due on 2nd December, let’s take a look at who made it through, who is out and who still has a chance of qualifying in the play-offs in March.
Fifty-three teams took part in the Euro24 qualifying groups, with the top two from each group qualifying for the finals next June. There were few surprises, with minnows like Faroe Islands, Moldova and San Mariono struggling to make the grade, though little Luxembourg did manage a creditable third place in Group J and will play Georgia in the play-off semi-finals.
Euro04 winners, Greece will be disappointed that they didn’t make it through to the finals, as will Northern Ireland, the Republic of ireland and the England-beating heroes of Iceland. The 20 teams that have qualified so far are:
Albania, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, England, France, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Scotland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland and Türkiye. Germany also qualify automatically as hosts.
England qualified unbeaten at the top of Group C, with six wins and two draws from eight games putting them comfortably six points ahead of Italy in second. Scotland were runners up to Spain in Group A with five wins and two draws from their eight games.
Both Northern Ireland – fifth in Group H with just three wins from ten – and the Republic of Ireland – forth in Group B with just two wins from eight – are out of the competition. However, Wales still have a chance of qualifying through the play-offs, despite only winning three of eight games in Group D.
Qualification for the play-offs was based on performance in the 2022-23 Nations League, using a complex formula that makes cricket’s Duckworth Lewis method seem simple!
However, Wales are not about to argue, as it’s earned them a semi-final play-off against Finland on 21st March. If they progress from this, they get the chance to win a place in your Euros 2024 football predictor selections in a play-off final against either Poland or Estonia on March 26th.
The next milestone in the road to Germany for Euro24 is the final tournament draw, which takes place at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Germany at 5pm on Saturday 2nd December. You can watch this draw live on UEFA.com.
The qualifying teams have been put into four pots, based on their performance in the qualifiers, and will be drawn into six groups A to F, with one team from each pot going into each group. England have made it into Pot One, while Scotland are in Pot Three. If they get through the play-offs, Wales will be in Pot Four. This raises the tantalizing prospect of England, Scotland and Wales all being in the same group at the finals next summer.
