Where There’s a will, There’s a Wiegman

When it comes to management, the England Women’s Football Team couldn’t be in better hands. Sarina Wiegman has been a winner all her life, both as a player and as a coach, and she has more than proved herself since she took charge of England in 2021.

Her first game as manager showed serious intent, as England thrashed North Macedonia 8-0 - and that was just the start. In her first six games as England manager, the side racked up an aggregate score of 53-0, including a record 20-0 humiliation of Latvia and 10-0 defeats of both Latvia and Luxembourg.

By contrast, under Phil Neville (and caretaker manager Hege Riise), England had enjoyed just four wins in their last fourteen games. After Wiegman too the helm, they would go the next thirty games undefeated, scoring 343 goals and conceding just 64, with a win ratio of over 80%.

Who is Sarina Wiegman?

Sarina Wiegman was born in The Hague, in the Netherlands, in 1969. As a midfield / defensive player she enjoyed success both at home and overseas. In her native Netherlands, she won the Dutch Championship and the KNVB Cup with Ter Leede and back-to-back KNVB cup wins with ADO Den Haag Women, while in the USA, she helped her North Carolina college side to the NCAA Championships.

Wiegman was just as successful when she turned to coaching. She took over a demoralised Netherlands side in 2017. Like England, they had won only one of their last five matches, yet just six months later, she led them to European Championship victory, gaining the FIFA Best Women’s Coach award in the process. As an encore, she took the Dutch women all the way to the finals of the World Cup in 2019, only losing to the world number one side, USA, in the final.

She is the only manager to have won the Euros managing two different sides, and the only woman to be awarded Best FIFA Women’s Coach more than once, adding the 2020 and 2022 awards to her personal trophy cabinet. She was also runner up at the awards in 2018 and 2019 and third in 2021, putting her in the world’s top three every year since 2017.

What does Wiegman bring to England?

With 99 international caps for the Netherlands, Sarina Wiegman brings a wealth of playing experience to her managerial role. As discussed above, she also has unrivalled experience of success in major competitions. But more important than that, she commands the total respect of her players. They trust her tactics and they want to win for her.

Wiegman has a direct, no nonsense approach that she makes no apologies for. In fact, the FA were told to take it or leave it when they first offered her the England role. “I will try and adapt to your culture,” she told the FA, “but the directness you have to know…I will not go around it or change that.”

Thankfully, the FA let her have her way, and what a way it has been! England arrive at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand this summer as one of the hot favourites. Millions of new fans at home and abroad will be hoping Wiegman can lead them to a repeat of their memorable Euros triumph.
