If you love football, there is nothing better than a summer football tournament. When the sun’s out, the green pitches await, and the best in Europe are taking to the field to compete for the title, it’s the pinnacle of the sport. The women’s game continues to gain greater interest from fans, and the Lionesses' success over the last ten years has certainly helped with that. Attendances are going up in the WSL each year, but it’s at an international level where the whole country comes together. In Switzerland this summer, England are joined by newcomers Wales, adding a bit of Home Nation spice to Group D!
One thing is for sure, England needs to up their game when it comes to the tournament. Qualification for the Euros and the Nations League and Friendly fixtures since have been unconvincing to say the least, and the experienced Sarina Weigman (4 major tournament finals in a row with the Netherlands and England) needs to find the right formula, and fast.
Even the night England qualified was underwhelming, a 0-0 draw away in Sweden, and the lack of goals has been a concern. England only scored eight goals across six qualifying games which is the biggest area that needs to be addressed before the tournament. Beating France away 2-1 was a big statement, but it came after losing the home game against the French a few days before. Two draws against Sweden and unconvincing wins against Ireland meant England finished in second place to qualify for the Euros.
In the near-year since qualification was secured, England have lost a high-scoring Wembley friendly against Germany, drew with the USA 0-0, and in the Nations League struggled to draw against Portugal, lost to Belgium away, but did make a statement with a 1-0 win against arch-rivals Spain.
England were worthy winners at the last Euros, the culmination of years of hard work across multiple squads, building towards a great moment. But of course, the Lionesses don’t want it to end there. Since then, they’ve reached (and lost) a World Cup final against Spain, and despite beating them in the Nations League recently, they remain the team to beat. England will for sure be one of the favourites this summer, and a tough group that includes debutant Wales, and fellow heavyweights the Netherlands, and France, it means the team needs to be at its best from matchday one. This might not be a bad thing to sharpen the senses and get standards as high as they need to be from the off. What’s been said of England over the last year is that the team needs to be more clinical when it matters, but with Beth Mead back, the ever-reliable Alessia Russo in the squad, a group of hungry and talented young players, and the experience of winning last time round, the Lionesses have a chance to repeat their success in Switzerland.
